This is a repost. As we discover new and more Earth-friendly ways to go around our daily household chores, we will also update our journal accordingly.

In this post, we show you how to prolong the shelf life of your detachable bamboo brushes through the use of fractionated coconut oil.

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil is a great way to maintain and protect your Neuhabitat detachable bamboo brushes. This article is a step-by-step guide on how to use fractionated coconut oil for your bamboo brushes and even other wood products.

Preparation

Before applying fractionated coconut oil, wash the bamboo brushes with mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a towel.

Choosing the right coconut oil is important. Selecting a food-safe or food grade coconut oil will not only prolong the life span of the wood, but provide peace of mind when using wooden utensils to handle food.

Application

Using a soft cloth or paint brush, apply a thin, even layer of coconut oil to the bamboo surface. Make sure to cover all surfaces except the bristles. Do not apply oil onto the bristles as they won't absorb the oil well. Work the oil in by gently rubbing the oil into the bamboo using circular motions if you are using a cloth. This helps the oil penetrate the wood. Allow the oil to absorb fully into the bamboo. This may take a few hours or best is overnight.

Maintenance

Depending on usage, reapply the oil to your bamboo brushes every 1-3 months. After each use, wipe the utensils clean with a dry cloth to prevent moisture buildup. Never use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or excessive water, as these can damage the bamboo.

Benefits

Using fractionated coconut oil on your bamboo brushes provides several benefits such as moisture protection. The oil helps protect the bamboo from moisture, reducing the risk of cracking or splitting.

Best part is, fractionated coconut oil has antibacterial properties, which can help prevent the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. And with regular oil application, it extends the lifespan of your bamboo brushes.

By following these simple steps, you'll be able to keep your bamboo brushes well-maintained, protected, and looking their best.

P.S. Just take note that the color of your bamboo brushes will most likely darken a little after oil application. That's because the oil seeps into the wood grain, thus bringing out the natural color of the wood.
